 Der Neoliberalismus und die Finanzwelt haben Europa als Geisel genommen und in eine tiefe Krise gestürzt. In den letzten zwanzig Jahren wurde die Bedeutung der Europäischen Union, die an einem konstanten, demokratischen Defizit leidet, auf den engen Blickwinkel des Gemeinsamen Marktes und der Gemeinschaftswährung reduziert. Liberalisierungen, Spekulationsblasen und der Abbau individueller und sozialer Rechte führten zu explosiven, wachsenden Ungleichheiten. Dies ist nicht das Europa, das vor Jahrzehnten als ein kriegsfreier Raum wirtschaftlicher und politischer Integration entworfen wurde. Dies ist nicht das Europa, das durch wirtschaftlichen und sozialen Fortschritt, wie auch durch die Erweiterung der Demokratie und sozialer Rechte aufgebaut werden sollte. Jenes europäische Projekt ist nun in Gefahr.
