Der Iran ist mehr als Rohani und Khamenei (DE & EN)

Eröffnungsrede zur Konferenz "The Democratic Movement Platform of Nations in Iran" (English below)

(please find English Version below)

Danke.

Dear comrades, dear friends, dear participants,

I would like to welcome you to today's exchange and expert discussion. I am pleased that you follow the invitation of my group, the left group of the European Parliament GUE/NGL. The conference was prepared in cooperation with the EU-Turkey Civic Commission and the Kurdish Institute in Brussels. The Kurdish Institute had asked me for the opening words to this conference. And I can say it´s my honor. Especialy as a member of the Interparliamentary EU-Turkey Delegation of the European Parliament I experience in particular that resolving the Kurdish issue is a key to democratizing the Middle East.  For years we have notice that all nationalist conflicts, whether in Turkey, Syria, and Iraq or in Iran, often violated the rightto self-determination of the Kurdish society. The Kurdish peopels are mostly the sufferer.

At the time this conference was titled “The Iranian Movement Platform of Nations in Iran” the current developments in Iran were unpredictably. Also the instrumentalization within the power struggle of the Iranian elites makes it difficult to overlook the wholedevelopments at the moment.

On the other hand, the protests did not come suddenly. They came spontaneously, started decentralized and directed first against the rise in price and the rise of unemployment. Many protesters make no big difference in their dissatisfaction between their anger towards Rohani or their anger towards Khamenei. Both try to catch the resistance of demonstrating ordinary people in their own power struggle. Let us not forget that Rohani's recent plans also provided for the termination of the privileges of religious foundations.

I would like to learn from your expertise in this exchange today and to receive suggestions from those who experienced Iranian society in a complex and differentiated way. Short-winded evaluations from a cozy European perspective do not help anyone.

At the same time, I know that we will not be able to agree on everything in our exchange today. But one thing is for sure: The Kurdish perspective is something special in the Middle East, and we share that. The solutions and experiences in Turkey, Iraq, Syria and Iran are always centered on key questions of democratic conflict solutions. We urgently need the understandings of similarities in the approach to the political conflicts. And there I see many common points.

1. As a left MEP, I fundamentally support calls for better living conditions, worldwide, and, of course, in Iran as well, provided that these demands are taken to the streets without violence and unless they are played against women and minority rights. Social, humanand Freedom rights are indivisible.

2. I consider Iran's foreign policy orientation to be useful for cooperation in the framework of the Silk Road project in the Euro-Asian area in a multi-polar world. That's why I condemn Trump's interferences.

3. We cannot overlook the fact that Trump is once again dreaming of the "regime change" and is trying to use the protests for this goal. He plays into the hands of Khamenei's conspiracy theories and heats up again the threat of war. By contrast, leftist and democratic forces must speak out - without making common work with the most conservative forces in Iran. Iranians can take the solution into their own hands and at the same time they need our solidarity. It's like everywhere: Turkey is more than Erdoğan and Iran is more than Rohani and Khamenei.

4. Therefore we will not silently watch an instrumentalization of the protests in the power struggle of the elites.

5. We call to the Government of Hassan Rohani to approach the people, to seek support for higher wages and to take their demands seriously and to reduce the subsidy cuts for food and gasoline.

6. Last but not least, I call on my German Government, which is traditionally linked very closely to Iran, and to the representatives of the European Union to do everything to ensure that no new military interventions are given a chance. It is necessary to strictly comply with the nuclear agreement, and that the sanctions are lifted in order to restore an equal international law dialogue.

That would be an honest support of the demonstrations and at the same time a clear policy towards Rohani.

I wish you a successful conference, and that the exchange and the resulting agreements for further cooperation are fruitful!
Thank you very much.
