Tajani must guarantee social dialogue in labour dispute with interpreters

Left MEPs are calling on the President of the European Parliament, Antonio Tajani, to step in to break the impasse in the ongoing labour dispute between interpreters and management. This follows a meeting this morning between GUE/NGL MEPs and representatives of the interpreters.

The Parliament’s management is refusing to constructively engage with the legitimate demands of the interpreters and their union representatives over deteriorating work conditions. The issue has reached an impasse, which Tajani - as guarantor of social dialogue - must break.

The interpreters and their union representatives deserve to be heard directly about their grievances. We therefore support the issue to be addressed in the upcoming Parliament Bureau meeting on Monday 2nd of July, with the presence of Tajani and all vice-Presidents.

“We demand that the Parliament’s administration backtrack on the unilateral decision to change working conditions and urge the Secretary-General to stop spreading misinformation on the issue,” said GUE/NGL President Gabi Zimmer.

“We reiterate our solidarity with the interpreters of the European Parliament, their strike action and stand for their dignified work conditions.”
