EU strategy for liquefied natural gas and gas storage

Today the report on the EU Strategy for liquefied natural gas and the storage of gas was adopted by a majority of 415 votes. Cornelia Ernst, Energy Spokesperson of the Delegation DIE LINKE. in the European Parliament, comments the result:

"The proposed EU strategy and the report adopted today are steps in the wrong direction. Gas is presented as "assistive technology" that would allow the use of renewable energies. It is planned to put EU money in the expansion of LNG terminals and in the construction of gas pipelines, especially from the "Connecting Europe Facility" and the Structural Funds. However, today the demand for gas in the EU is 23 percent below their peak in 2010, also due to energy efficiency measures and the use of renewable energies. If it is now planned to increase the investments in LNG, the EU provides for an infrastructure that it does not need, and that must be paid by all taxpayers. 75 percent of gas demand in the EU originate solely from six Member States: Germany, Great Britain, Italy, France, Netherlands and Spain. So to say from countries that already use energy efficiency measures and that have programs to promote renewable energies. In addition: In the production, delivery and use of liquid gas sets free methane, which is much more harmful to the climate than already is CO2."

Cornelia Ernst continued:

"The European Commission overrated the gas demand for many years now - since the year 2003 the Commission had to correct its predictions downwards again and again. The Commission and the majority of the European Parliament have unfortunately failed to draw the right conclusions out of it."

Cornelia Ernst concludes:

"The spending plans for the EU funds must be based on the target of reducing greenhouse gas (80% -95%) in 2050, that means projects financed from EU funds, must include the ecological footprint from the outset and the appropriate conclusions should be drawn from it."
