A statement from President Gabi Zimmer after a meeting between GUE/NGL MEPs and the EU’s chief negotiator on Brexit, Michel Barnier

MdEP Gabi Zimmer (DIE LINKE.), Vorsitzende der GUE/NGL, zum Winterhilfsplan für Asylbewerber

A statement from President Gabi Zimmer after a meeting between GUE/NGL MEPs and the EU’s chief negotiator on Brexit, Michel Barnier, in Strasbourg on Tuesday evening:

“In order for a fair agreement between the UK and the EU, the issue over citizens’ rights and the status of the north of Ireland must be front and centre of any future agreement between the two sides.”

“These have long been GUE/NGL’s key demands and we are still awaiting positive steps to be taken in the EU-UK negotiations.

“We need to see real progress in the rights of the 3.3 million EU citizens living in the UK, the 1.2 million UK citizens in the EU and, of course, the people in the north of Ireland.

“The European Parliament will have the opportunity to evaluate the latest agreements at the December plenary when MEPs will have the chance to examine in depth as to whether enough progress has been made.”
